New ENERGY STAR® Standards in Effect for the Northern Zone

As of January 1, 2016, new energy efficiency requirements are in effect that raise the bar for windows to qualify for ENERGY STAR® labeling in the Northern Climate Zone. These updated specifications – known as ENERGY STAR Version 6.0 – reflect the efforts of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to encourage better energy performance and reduced environmental impact across a variety of consumer products, and were finalized in January 2014.

What’s Changed for 2016

To carry an ENERGY STAR label as of January 1, 2015, windows had to meet the more stringent Version 6.0 specification for the North-Central, South-Central and/or Southern Climate Zones. Window manufacturers were allowed to continue applying the ENERGY STAR label to windows that met the Version 5.0 specification for the Northern Climate Zone throughout 2015. However, beginning on January 1, 2016, manufacturers must meet the Version 6.0 specification for the Northern Zone to qualify for ENERGY STAR labeling.

Previously for the Northern Climate Zone, ENERGY STAR criteria permitted windows with a U-factor of 0.30 or less and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SGHC) of any. The new Version 6.0 requirements for the Northern Zone require a U-factor of 0.27 and SGHC of any.

In essence, U-factor measures the amount of heat transferred through a window. The lower the U-factor rating, the lower a window’s potential for heat loss and the better it insulates. An SHGC measurement represents the amount of solar radiation that can pass through a window. The lower a window’s SHGC value, the less solar heat is transmitted.
