What is Full-Frame Window Replacement?

If your home has both frame and sash problems that need to be addressed, there is an effective solution available: full frame replacement. Full frame replacement restores the structural integrity and beauty of your windows, so you can rest easy knowing your new replacement windows are exceptionally energy-efficient and your views are the best around.

Transform Your Windows

full frame replacementFull frame replacement takes a window down to its original rough opening (the raw framing boards). Although this may seem extreme, the benefit is that it can reveal issues that might be hidden behind the existing frame, such as water intrusion, rotted or damaged wood, poor or no insulation, and insect infestation. In addition to making windows difficult to operate, worn-out frames also leak air and reduce your home’s efficiency.

Old windows that have visible decay are an obvious choice for full frame replacement, however it can be a good choice for windows of any age. To help you make a decision between insert replacement and full frame replacement, ask your contractor to inspect your windows for visible signs of wear, water damage, and other indicators that the frames may not be sturdy enough to support replacement windows.

“Full frame replacement is the right application for a complete transformation,” says Dave Searls, owner of Home Improvement Consultant Group (and Authorized Sunrise Dealer) in Belton, Missouri. “It’s the best option to clear up issues with rotting sills and brick mold, and other deterioration problems.”

What to Expect

In the case of a full frame replacement, the contractor will begin by removing your old window and frames all the way down to the rough opening. They should next seal the opening to prevent air and water from seeping in around the window. Once the new window has been positioned in the opening, a water management system should be added at the sill, and the window should be insulated to prevent drafts, moisture and insects from entering around the frame.
