Follow These Safety Tips for a Spooktacular Halloween

Halloween is tops among the favorite holidays for kids. Ensure nothing interferes with the fun by following these Halloween safety tips from Sunrise Windows & Doors.

Costume Safety

  • Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. As an alternative, use a reflective trick-or-treat bag or add strips of reflective tape.
  • Costumes should not include clothing that drags on the ground, or accessories or shoes that might cause your child to trip and fall.
  • Use makeup or a decorative hat as an alternative to a mask, which can limit a child’s field of vision.
  • Be sure to dress for the weather, which may mean adding layers if the temperature will be cold.

Preparing for Visitors

  • Welcome trick-or-treaters by removing items from your lawn, sidewalk and driveway that could cause tripping, such as garden hoses, toys, bikes and yard ornaments.
  • Ensure outdoor lights are in good working order, and replace bulbs if necessary.
  • Restrain pets for their safety and the safety of neighborhood children. Stressed or nervous pets are more likely to bite and scratch.

When Trick-or-Treating

  • Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult. Ensure older children travel in groups.
  • Discuss in advance the route children should follow. If you do not accompany your children, ask them to call you if they plan to go on a street that isn’t on the route.
  • Give each child a flashlight to help them avoid stumbling and falls in the dark.
  • Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic so motorists can see you.
  • Only accept treats at the front door; never enter the home of a stranger. Avoid houses that are not well-lit.
  • Be cautious around unfamiliar animals, especially dogs.
  • Instruct children not to eat any treats until they get home so a parent can inspect the candy for tampering.
