Window technology has undergone major changes in recent decades, and window efficiency is about to become even better in 2015. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has revised its ENERGY STAR® requirements so windows and doors must meet even stricter performance standards as of January 1, 2015. In order to qualify for an ENERGY STAR rating, products must meet all of the following criteria.
U-factor measures a window’s ability to resist heat transfer and thus its ability to insulate a home. The lower the U-factor, the better the window insulates. SHGC stands for Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, which measures the amount of solar radiation that can pass through a window. The lower a window’s SHGC value, the less solar heat is transmitted.
Requirements Vary by Region
Requirements for ENERGY STAR windows are tailored to the different regions of the country. The chart below details the climate zones for replacement windows and doors.
U-factors and SHGC requirements have been adjusted for every climate zone for the coming year. Currently in the Northern Climate Zone, Energy Star criteria include a U-factor of 0.30 or less and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SGHC) of any. The new 2015 requirements for the Northern Climate Zone will be U-factor of 0.27 and any SGHC.
What This Means for Consumers
Energy efficiency has become an increasingly important national priority because homes consume 40% of all material and energy worldwide. Unfortunately, windows and doors are often a major source of energy loss within a home. For the average customer, the EPA’s new criteria mean that ENERGY STAR products now must provide even better energy performance. This translates into more energy savings and cheaper utility bills for homeowners.
